BristolCon Fringe: May 2016 - Paul Cornell

There's no shortage of fantastical content in the second reading of the evening. The third book in Paul Cornell's Shadow Police series is called Who Killed Sherlock Holmes. In the scene that Paul reads our heroes discover the ghost of the great detective, apparently recently deceased having been stabbed with a magical knife. Can ghosts be killed? If so, who was responsible, and why?

BristolCon Fringe: May 2016 - Martyn Waites

The May Fringe event was a crime fiction special, in honour of Crimefest, our local crime fiction convention. Both readers had a connection to speculative fiction, but we began with someone who writes entirely non-fantastical crime novels. Martyn Waites has a spectacular writing career under his own name, but he also writes as Tania Carver. It is one of her books that he chose to read from.

BristolCon Fringe: April 2016 - Q&A

At the end of the evening we had the traditional Q&A session. Jo talked about her forthcoming novel, The Summer Goddess. Pete's book, A Tiding of Magpies, is now available. Will talked about reciting stories from memory. And everyone wanted to know where Myfanwy gets her ideas from.

BristolCon Fringe: April 2016 - Session 3

This is the final session from the April Open Mic night. The readers are:

• Steve Tanner, with part of the first book of a fantasy trilogy
• Cheryl Morgan, with part of a story called "Snow White’s Wedding"
• Will Macmillan Jones, a completer short story called "Hatchet"
• Jonathan L Howard, with part of an unpublished novel, Heart of the Empire

You'll be relieved to know that there is no cannibalism in this one, though there is one very violent moment.

Continuing our April Open Mic night, the readers in the second session were:

• Kevlin Henney, with some of his trademark flash fiction
• Pete Sutton, with a story from his collection, A Tiding of Magpies
• Joanne Hall, with an extract from the novel she is currently writing, Gods of the Grey City
• Myfanwy Rodman, a really gruesome story called "Zombie Walk"

This session absolutely earned the explicit tag.

BristolCon Fringe: April 2016 - Session 1

April is our traditional Open Mic night. Each reader is given 5 minutes to read whatever they want. Sometimes we get parts of novels, sometimes complete flash fiction, and sometimes something in between. In the first session the readers were:

• Justin Newland, who read from a fantasy novel set in ancient times
• Amanda Huskisson, more Egyptian fantasy
• Jack Anderson – an historical novel about Hannibal
• Jackie Rogers – flash fantasy

BristolCon Fringe: February 2016 - Q&A

As is traditional, both readers were put to the question after their sessions. Obviously you won't have heard the material that Will read, but if you take a look at the books he has available on Amazon you should get the idea.

Gareth is asked about writing space opera and bad poetry. The latter is bravely demonstrated. You have been warned.

BristolCon Fringe: February 2016 - Gareth L. Powell

We had something of a recording malfunction (or more accurately a recorder operator malfunction) at our February meeting which resulted in our losing the first reading. Our sincere apologies to Will Macmillan Jones. We have a short piece of poetry from him in the Q&A, and he's back in our open mic session which will be uploaded here in July.

Our second reader for February was Gareth L. Powell. As everyone in Bristol has all of his Ack-Ack Macaque books, Gareth chose to read something new. This reading is the opening two chapters of a forthcoming, currently only provisionally titled, space opera novel.

BristolCon Fringe: January 2016 - Q&A

Finally our readers for January were asked to explain themselves, which was almost certainly a bad idea because you should never try to explain comedy. Cheryl tried hard to make project management sound amusing and failed dismally. Nick explained ASBOs for the benefit of foreign readers. Will explained more about the world of his book. We narrowly avoid mention of fluffy cushions.
