Monday Apr 24, 2017
Finally we came to our Q&A session in which Cheryl gets to practice her Spanish Inquisition skills on the unfortunate readers. In this case that involved much discussion of Egyptian mythology and of the evils of investment bankers.

BristolCon Fringe: January 2017 - Tej Turner
Monday Apr 24, 2017
Monday Apr 24, 2017
Our second reader for January joined us all the way from Cardiff. Tej Turner's fiction involves ancient history mainly in the names of the nightclubs that his characters frequent. The Janus Cycle, his first book, is already in print, but for us he read from his forthcoming book, Dinnusos Rises. Both books are set amongst an alternative community of mostly young people in a small town. There is sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll, and quite a bit of magic.

January had a vaguely ancient history feel to it, kicking off with Amanda Huskisson. We have enjoyed hearing snippets from her fantasy tale of ancient Egypt at open mics, but this time we got a full reading and learned more about her characters.

At the end of the evening Cheryl Morgan put our two readers to the question. There is talk of giant penguins, Helsinki, nuclear power stations in France, the End of Civilisation As We Know It, and Jo's plans to set up a resistance movement in the Welsh Marches.

BristolCon Fringe: November 2016 - Jessica Rydill
Thursday Apr 06, 2017

Our second reader for November was Jessica Rydill. Her Shamanworld series was part-released by Orbit several years ago, but it fell victim to the all too regular "you only get one chance to be the next JK Rowling" syndrome. Thankfully Kristell Ink has picked up the entire series so fans of the early books will get to find out what happens at the end. In the meantime here's Jessica with a reading from the first book, Children of the Shaman.

The November Fringe was a fantasy special courtesy of Jo Hall and Kristell Ink. Jo works for them as an editor and brought two of her favourite writers the perform for us.
First up was author, podcaster, dyslexia activist and accidental political comedian, Joel Cornah. He read from The Sky Slayer, which is about pirates and curses and the like.
